The National Sunday School Camp 2011 -
De Hoek, Oudtshoorn Theme: "Your choices will determine your destiny." A number of meetings and extensive planning went into organizing the Sunday School Camp in De Hoek, Oudtshoorn on the weekend of 30 September 2011 till 02 October 2011. It is exactly the reason why the camp is considered by the majority attendees as a great success. De Hoek in itself is a very awesome place with chalets, dormitories, pools and huge grass fields surrounded by mountains. Letters, phone calls, sms'e and the social networks were all used to promote the camp. This was a children camp and we tried to make education fun and entertaining. The children were divided into five groups and were encouraged to compete against each other for the duration of the camp. The following districts were represented at the camp: a) Central Cape, b) Southern Cape, c) Eden, d) Garden Route, e) Boland, f) Freestate and g) West Coast We started to register and allocating the accommodation on Thursday from 18:00 till the early hours of the morning. The camp was officially opened on Friday morning after breakfast. The children were entertained by vibrant teachers who set the tone for the rest of the camp. Everyone was dressed in their yellow sweaters and after lunch the whole 244 exited campers were on their way to the historical, most famous Congo Caves. The caves are about 15 minutes from the camping site. This was an experience that no one will easily forget. The children entered the caves in groups of 54. The tour guides inside the caves kept each group busy for about an hour. The Children outside were entertained through the play and learn techniques by well-trained facilitators. The focus area of the activities was to: 1) Developing Christian values and principals 2) Improve/develop self-expression 3) Create trust 4) Focus on peer support (and not peer pressure) 5) Enhance social and personal development 6) Have fun through exercise. The Saturday comprises of a teaching on "Readers are Leaders", Bible Quiz, sport games and a talent show. The sport games were made up of the following: Tug of war: The objective of this game is to pull your opponent over a line using a rope. The challenge in this game is that you are standing on a slippery floor, so you do not have any grip. The message we were trying to get across with this game, is that you need to rely on each other and allow a team to work on a strategy on what is the best way to win their opponent. This allows the mind to be opened. "The mind is like a parachute, its works best when it is open". Mini Olympics: The objective of this game was to challenge the participants. They start at a certain point and need to go through all sorts of challenges to complete the course. This game is a tag game, so when you have completed your course you need to tag your partner. This game allows them to grow endurance and perseverance. While one of the members is on the course the rest of the his/her team must cheer them on (we need to support one another). Soccer: Two teams play against each other and winner is determined by the score. The teams select their players and place them in their best position. This allows them to see that not everyone is the same and that everyone is unique. Team work is also required. We also try to show them that nothing in life comes easy; you need to work towards it. Pool games: We tried to play this game last because we didn't want it to be so warm. It is a fact that most kids like to be in the water when the weather is warm. This shows them that sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone and withstand the coldness of life. The talent show developed their personal skills and taught them public speaking. This amazing camp was closed on Sunday with a morning service and a take away lunch. |
